Dinner for Vampires

Seems like lately I keep tripping over blog posts by writers (myself included) who feel the need to justify the creation of yet another vampire character. You know what? I’m not going to apologize anymore. I write about vampires. Deal with it.

;)

Instead, I’m going to write about what I’d serve a vampire if he was coming to dinner. Um, besides myself, of course.
I’d probably start with a glass of red wine…I like a pinot, or maybe a shiraz. Nothing with too much oak in it.

…and maybe serve some cheese with it, you know? Little bites of cheese, some that are hard and tangy, and some that are smooth and creamy and spreadable…

For the main course, I’d serve pasta with a rich meat sauce. I’d go light on the garlic, of course…

And I’d have a loaf of crusty bread with olive oil for dipping…and smearing…

And desert would, of course, somehow involve chocolate, thick and smooth and sweet….

You’re probably wondering whether my vampire dinner guest could actually eat what I’d serve him. Well, no, probably not, but I can, so the menu includes all my favorites. He’ll dine later…

Interview with L.M. Pruitt: Author of 'Taken' & Giveaway

1. Describe ‘Taken’ in three words.

--Smart, sexy, and dangerous

2. How many books have you written? If more than once, which is your favorite?

--Right now I have three books out—Shades of Gray, New Moon Rising and Taken, with Shades of Desire coming out next month. Out of those completed four, I’d have to say Taken is my favorite.

3. When did you realize your first wanted to be a writer?

--I’ve always written, usually fluffy, chick-lit type stuff. It wasn’t until the last couple of years I seriously started writing, and only recently have I thought about being able to write as a genuine career.

4. Do you have strange habits that help with your writing?

--I wouldn’t say strange, really. I tend to have playlists for songs or types of scenes. If I get stuck, I’ll revert to handwriting/long hand for a bit to clear the muck. Probably my strangest habit is reading my raw chapters—those I’ve sent to my crit partner, Shea MacLeod—on my phone while at the bar. If it can hold my attention even while competing with vodka, I’m on the right track.

5. What kind of research did you do to ‘Taken’?

--Quite a bit, actually. Some is standard for any book—location details, income and job specifications. For Taken, I also did research on human trafficking, the Russian Mafiya, New York state name changing procedures, handguns, Tasers, the AFCIS system—basically, a ton of stuff. About half I pulled from old school textbooks (I was a criminology major) and family members who are former law enforcement. The rest? I’d like to thank Ask.com.

6. What is your favourite part/scene from ‘Taken’?

--Wow. This is genuinely tough. Since I only get to pick one, I’d say the chapter where the truth about Frankie and Jack—or the partial truth, anyway—comes to light. It drives home the complexity and need in their relationship even while amping up the mystery about their past. In other words, it appeals to both the mind and the heart—and I don’t get to write too many scenes like that.

Lexie

Lexie ran with a confidence only found in dreams. She propelled her body through a lush forest that was full of rich colors and intoxicating scents. She knew where the trail would take her and smiled knowing she would see him again. As she rounded the corner of the worn trail, he stood there motionless. Surprise once again filled those intense blue eyes of his. She could never see his whole face, but his eyes always captivated her, drawing her in. Wrapping her arms around him, she breathed in his heady scent. His arms encircled her and she hoped the moment would last, that she could will herself to stay long enough this time to hear the sound of his voice wash over her. There was so much to say, but the sudden vile presence of death crawled up from behind her as her words turned into a scream….

Lexie reached out and felt the cool space next to her on the bed. As always, she was alone. The dream was so real. As much as the ending always terrified her, she could almost smell his pleasing scent on her pajamas and feel his touch. Her dreams were easily forgotten, but not this one. She had been having the same dream, with a few slight variations for months. Even while lost in slumber, she was always aware she was dreaming of him and hoped for a different outcome, but it never happened. Of all mornings, she wished it had a happy ending.

Mornings were never her specialty, but the hurried sounds of her new stepbrothers banging through the small condo made this particular morning disturbing. They awoke her from dreaming of him with their obnoxious shouting of directions and generalized complaints. Over the last month of getting to know them, it had been their noise that required the biggest adjustment. She no longer lived in a calm home with just her mom Ruby and sister Ella, she now lived in what felt like a testosterone zoo.
Or a psychotic reality show.

Stretching across her bed with a complacent smile, Lexie decided not to allow them the privilege of making her last morning in her childhood home unpleasant. They could try rushing her all they wanted but she would take her sweet time getting out of bed.

Once her heart rate settled from the dream’s frightful ending, the warmth and fulfillment of his embrace left her feeling content and flushed. As she rolled onto her side and hugged her pillow, she grasped on to the lasting image of him just behind her eyelids and wished her dreams of him didn’t always end so abruptly.

She never met anyone like him – tall and dark haired, he was intense but beautiful. Although he was an illusion, thinking of him was comforting. As a rule, Lexie never bought into the idea of ESP or the guy on TV acting like The Ghost Whisperer, but sometimes she wished she could. If there was a possibility he was really waiting for her in the woods somewhere, she would shake inside out with excitement and search the great northeast to find him.

My subconscious created perfection for me. It’s just a shame he doesn’t really exist.

With that thought, her enthusiasm faded. Even if she did find him here, she would be leaving him behind, just like she was leaving her home, friends and the remnants of her dad.

Why Lexie was being forced to move to the “Moose Capital of the World” was not her favorite topic to think about. She had so many plans for her senior year of high school, plans that would form lifelong memories with her best friend Liz. They were going to hop on a train and catch a Broadway show in New York, maybe visit some colleges in Boston, and most definitely skip a little school to go to Six Flags.

What will I do without her? She has kept me going through this last year.

Lexie’s father Ed died the year before. It was such a painful time; she did not think she would ever accept that he was really gone. His lasting presence in her condo was wrapped in the memories of him sitting in the living room grading papers or coming through the door after being at the college all day. The worst part was, she caused his death and moving was not going to ease that memory.

‘Fate Fixed’ is the first book in ‘The Erris Coven’ series by Bonnie Wheeler.

My love for this book and its characters was instantaneous. Lexie and Torin’s backgrounds are so very different yet very similar: they are a match made in heaven. Cian, Theo, Liz, Braden and Teagan all played their part in this book and I loved how it all came together. Theo and Teagan made me laugh quite a bit with their quick thinking wit.

I loved how Torin’s family history was explained in such depths. It made me realise that the other characters subtle comments earlier in the book were just teasing me and building me up for the full explanation into Torin’s history.

I felt so sorry for Lexie. Her history isn’t as gruesome as Torin’s but still as tragic. She has had to carry some major guilt with her and I’m surprised that she hasn’t sunk into a major depression but it just shows that she is made of strong stuff. I did feel really bad for her when her mother was taking her step-family’s side in everything.

Overall, thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I hope there is more to come. If there is, then you will probably find me huddled up in a corner getting my fix.

"There’s something erotic about the stillness that comes to me when we share a kiss. Everything fades away until there’s only me and him, hearts beating in anticipation. How his hot breath feels on my lips right before I quickly moisten them with my tongue. The flickering of his eyes as he breaks contact with mine so he can glance down at my mouth. I love the tingles that erupt over my skin, and how my stomach dips as if a million butterflies take flight. Everything inside screams for me to take what I want, to not draw it out, but seize the moment passionately. It doesn’t matter how many times I kiss Mason, each time my reaction was the same. I’ll never be able to get enough of the taste of him.

But my favorite moment is always the few seconds after I tenderly brush my lips against his, as I pull myself away with a slight smile.

What will he do? Will he take the bait?

Looking straight into his eyes, I prepared myself for it. The flash of hunger and desire that tells me he wants me just as bad, if not more. From the way his pupils dilate to the moment where I can almost see his wolf peering out through his eyes. One touch, that’s all it ever takes.
Mason moved so fast that had I blinked, I’d have missed it. His hand weaved its way through my hair, pulling my face back to his. The world stopped as he kissed me back. Forcefully. Masterfully. Perfectly.

I believe you, I repeated over and over as he dominated our kiss, his tongue stroking and moving against mine. I struggled not to drown in him as heat exploded in my body and I devoured everything he gave me. I poured all my love back into the moment, hoping I could somehow convey just how amazing I thought he was and how grateful I was for him. I couldn’t tell him enough, show him enough, so I stopped trying and just reveled in the sensations I was experiencing. I was his and he was mine.

I couldn’t help but quake as he brushed his fingers over my fevered skin, each touch wreaking havoc on my sensitive flesh and I clung to him as our kiss deepened even more.

“You’re killing me, Mason,” I groaned helplessly into his mouth as I sunk into his embrace further. The man had turned me into a gooey mess.

His chuckle rumbled through his chest, vibrating against me and he made to pull away. Whimpering, I moved to straddle him, taking control. Now that he’d started, there was no way I was ready for it to be over."

Describe ‘Whirl’ in three words.

Elementals. Dark. Kickass.

Tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind ‘Whirl’.

Whirl was inspired by a piece of classical music. The French composer Maurice Ravel composed a work for solo piano called Gaspard de la Nuit. This music was based upon a series of poems by Aloysius Bertrand.

The first movement of Ravel’s work, entitled Ondine, is based upon the poem of the same name by Bertrand. This poem serves as the epigraph in Whirl. Based upon an old French myth, the poem tells the story of Ondine, a water nymph who sings to a mortal man, attempting to lure him to her. He rejects her love and pleas to join her in ruling the water world. Rejected and heartbroken, Ondine fades away, disappearing beneath the waves.

I highly recommend readers of Whirl to listen to Ravel’s Ondine. The intricate music is haunting, dark, romantic, and exciting. These were all qualities that influenced Whirl and the Ondine Quartet series.

When did you first realise you wanted to be a writer?

I began writing stories as a child, so I’ve always had a vague, far-off dream of becoming a published writer. Life ultimately took me down a different career path, but the dream remained.

Last year, I did NaNoWriMo for the first time just for fun. I simply wanted to get into the habit of writing daily. Once I completed it, I couldn’t stop. That was when I really realized that I wanted to be a writer and write every single day.

In January 2011, one of my new year’s resolutions was to publish my first book. No more excuses. The idea for the Ondine Quartet series came to me at the end of that month, and I immediately began to work on Whirl.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I’m an avid reader. Besides books, I also enjoy watching movies, Japanese TV shows (j-dorama), and going to museums and classical music concerts. I love to train my dog and spend time outside with her. Food is another passion of mine, so I spend quite a bit of time per week trying out new recipes and exploring new restaurants with my husband. I also practice vipassana meditation daily.

What is the hardest part about writing?

Writing requires total and absolute concentration for me. I shut my home office door, turn off the phone, and I can’t listen to music or other people talking. Because it requires so much concentration, I’m constantly surprised by how physically and mentally exhausted I get, especially after an intense writing session. It really does take everything out of me.

If you could have any actors, model etc in the world to play your characters in a tv show, who would you pick and why?

This is difficult! Since I don’t really watch television, my picks are mainly movie actors. All of these choices are based on looks alone, and my image of my characters may not be the same for all readers!

Whirl is the first book, and debut, in the Ondine Quartet series by Emma Raveling and what a debut it is.

At the beginning I was a bit confused by all the customized terms that Raveling had used but once I read more into the story I totally became ensnared by the thrill of Julian, the taboo of Tristan, the boyish charms of Ryder and the unconditional love that comes from friendship with Chloe and Aubrey, that I soon got lost in their world. The main heroine herself, Kendra is everything that you don’t want in an enemy: tough, defiant, persistent and an unlimited supply of fighting spirit.

Now that I have gushed over the characters, let’s get on with the other good stuff, the plot. My favourite thing about this book is that it’s a very different, unlike anything I have come across before. The plot centers around Kendra and her role in freeing her race (water elementals) from an ancient war with the Aquidae (fire elementals) as well as irritating the hell out of her grandmother on her journey. The moments between Kendra and her grandmother, I find quite funny because if I Kendra’s age and in her situation then I would be the same taking into consideration her upbringing. I think a lot of other readers would agree. With the help of her friends and some gorgeous men, Kendra starts to make a real difference in the hidden town of Haverleau and comes to realize her full potential.

The other thing that I love about this book is the way it gets me questioning things. I am fascinated by this different, but same, world where ondines, dissondines, selkies and demillirs were a race started by a water deity. It’s a bit god like in the creation but it gets me thinking about evolution. The unique virtues, hierarchy, French undertone and hidden villages have me intrigued and excited about this series and I honestly can’t wait to read the next installment, ‘Billow’.

"She ran her hands through the brush that rose around her. Each branch was filled with droplets. Spikes pricked on some plants, others felt smooth. One felt soft and downy at first, then stung her curious fingers and Josie pulled her hand to her chest. Her legs ached as they summited the hilltop.

Bane led her a small ways down the other side and he pointed to a small clearing. “It won’t be the softest night’s sleep. But I’m so dead on my feet I won’t care.”

Josie cocked her head to the side and noticed the way his body slumped forward and his feet dragged. “This’ll be fine.”

He bent at one side to lower the pack to the ground. “I can defend this, but I’ll want to catch some Zs before nightfall.” He kicked a few stones out of the way. Then he pulled a pile of cloth out of his bag and rolled it out on the mossy ground. Josie watched him slide metal sticks from the same nylon bag. He adjusted them back and forth ’til they became long, skinny poles, which he fed through loops of plastic on fabric.

“What is that?” Josie marveled at Bane’s skill as he swiveled the metal tubes and the interior of the contraption inflated, forming an oblong box.

“It’s a tent.” He rifled through the pack again, pulling out several machines, which Josie now knew to be guns, and then two sleeping bags. “We may have to zip these together to stay warm.” He didn’t meet her eyes. “But I won’t try anything.”
He tossed a few more items into the enclosure and crawled inside. Josie could tell she’d be able to fit too, but it would be a tight squeeze. The idea of being in such a small space so close to Bane’s body again sent shivers of anticipation fluttering along her back and shoulders, even while a small tremor of nerves jolted between her legs.

The tent stretched one way, then another, as Bane organized things within it. Something about the increasingly long stretches between his movements told her he was dragging it out. “Um, I’m done. But I need to sleep for a while.” The tone of his voice sounded like a question.

Josie went to her knees at the mouth of the tent and stuck her head inside. “What do you want me to do?” She searched his deep-set eyes for direction.
Bane rested on his heels, his knees splayed wide. The top of his blond head nearly brushed the roof of the tent and his broad shoulders filled the close space. “I’m asking if it’s okay with you if I rest for a while.”

As she’d never been asked such a question, Josie didn’t know how to answer. “Yes, it’s fine…” When he didn’t move, she struggled to clarify. “Do you want me to come inside, or stay out there?” She jerked her thumb back in the direction of her hips, which still poked out the tent’s door.

“Whichever you want, babe.” He said it with a small chuckle, but Josie noted the redness creeping up his neck to play under the stubble on his jaw. She remembered the way his chin had scraped hers when they kissed. Her hand rose to cool the abrasion.

“I want to stay here.” She crawled into the tent alongside Bane and lay on her side on the sleeping bag he’d rolled for her. “I want to know… I want to understand what you were thinking before.”

Nervousness danced in her belly, but Bane turned away from her and lay down on his own sleeping bag, his back to her, his head resting on a small pillow. “Forget about it. It won’t happen again, and in a few days neither of us will even remember this.” He made a show of yawning, stretching and settling his body.

Imitating him, Josie stretched her arms above her head and struggled to find a comfortable position on the ground. Bane had spread some thin, inflatable pads under the sleeping bags, but it was far less comfortable than her bed at Adam’s house, or the mattress on the boat.

The thin cotton of his t-shirt strained across his shoulders and upper back. Josie scooted closer, until she nestled against the length of him. A little jolt of excitement shot through her to feel his firm backside against her hips, and she angled her body until those mounds pressed into the cradle of her groin. Of course, that necessitated her laying a hand on his upper arm for balance, and her face pressed between his shoulder blades.

“What are you doing?” The pillow muffled his voice.

Josie stopped shuffling, realizing she’d been pawing him. “Nothing, just getting comfortable.” Instinct told her to pull away and roll back to her side of the tent. Bane’s muscles felt stiff under her fingers. But she didn’t want to let go.
“I only have so much self-control, babe.” He began rolling her direction, and Josie scooted back to avoid getting squashed. When his gaze fell on hers, it looked darker, and infinitely more scary than usual. “If you don’t want a repeat performance of earlier, you’ll keep some distance.” His look dared her to argue, demanded she slink to her corner and cower.

Well, Josie had done enough of that with Adam. “If you just explained to me what you were trying to do…” Her voice rose and she struggled to find the right words, but Bane’s hand shot out and grabbed her wrist. He dragged her hand to the juncture of his thighs and pressed her palm to the ridge along his fly. Only this time she knew what lay beneath, and what he meant to do with it."

Josie and Bane are electric. Their encounters are full of sexual tension in the first few acquaintances and then it becomes very lusty. Josie is a strong character and is a great match for Bane. She doesn’t let him push her around. Bane’s softer side comes out when he is around Josie. He is a protector first and a terminator second. I like their union and think they make for an undead couple. Now, one character I can’t stand is Anna. She just oozed ‘hate me’ pheromones.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this short and refreshing read. This is the first time where I have read anything that has the main characters being zombies. Quite a different read for me but enjoyable.

Cherished is the second book in the Mystic Wolves series by Belinda Boring. This book is its prequels complete opposite but is still just as breathtaking. The emotion, the love and most of all, the passion is what makes this novella mind blowing.

Darcy and Mason make the most amazing couple. Darcy is still taking in and processing the events from the previous day and Mason is trying to help her come to terms with it whilst dealing with his own issues. It is just amazing the way that Mason tries to make Darcy feel better and build her confidence even though he is going through hell himself. I just love how selfless he is and Darcy is the exact same when it comes to her man and her pack.

Without Mercy’s theme, I think, is retribution whereas Cherished’s theme is more centered on love. I don’t just mean the whole lovey dovey emotions that go with love or the lust (well a little of that) but it’s more about the more complex emotions that make a relationship really strong enable it to go the distance. I don’t want to say too much or else I will ruin the novella for you.

Overall, just absolutely loved every word of Cherished. It had me gripped all the way through and I was just in awe of Mason and Darcy. They are definitely one of my top favourite fictional couples. Mason + Darcy = SWOON!! Can’t possibly say anything else except..READ IT!

Secrets and Trust is the second installment in ‘The Vampire Relationship Guide’ series by Evelyn Lafont. Funny, sexy and hot are just a few words that would sum this book up to me (and the lead male character Walker..*fans face*).

This book basically picks up where Meeting and Mating (book one) leaves off. Josie and Walker have been spending some quality time together after her near death experience and are on a road trip to Texas, Walker’s home. There were quite a few surprises in this book for Josie and it all started when she arrived at Walker’s humble abode. We see Josie and Walker’s relationship progress as they start to get a bit more serious about one another and what that entails.

I think the basis of this series revolves around relationships. I think if you took the supernatural aspect out of the story, these rules to dating and relationships would be just as applicable in real life. Everyone has to decide what they want from a relationship and work hard at it to make it work if they think it’s worth it. Which is exactly what Josie and Walker are doing in this series. The supernatural aspect is a fun twist to the story and makes it more appealing a read for me. Nothing to do with Walker being such an irresistible, hot and sexy vampire…*shakes head*, nope nothing to do with it at all *smiley face*.

Overall, thoroughly enjoyed reading this installment in the series and can’t wait to see what Lafont comes out with next. It’s definitely a series for those that like reading about the supernatural, especially vampires and werebunnies.

Poor Annabel is heartbroken and bravely pushes Jeremy aside to try and get on with her life; but she can’t let herself totally let go. Enter Lilly, Annabel’s best friend in the world and fashion designer. Lilly is going to France for a fashion competition and drags Annabel along to try and perk her up from her post-break up blues. Annabel is reluctant at first but soon finds the idea of visiting another country and seeing some of the wonders of the worlds exhilarating. She finds a lot more wonders that she could ever imagine.

I absolutely loved Annabel and Lilly. Their dynamic relationship is invigorating. It’s not very often you can find someone that you can be truly yourself around but this friendship is one of them. Lilly helps Annabel realize that she needs to move on and Annabel does the same for Lilly: by making her realize that she needs to let go of her grudge. Lilly is such a funky free spirit and I love her wit. Annabel is more of the shy one that takes some time to come out of her box. The only annoyance I had with this book was that about half way through there was a lot of spelling errors.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would happily read more of Astor’s work. It has a light fluffy feel to the plot and I like that every once and a while. Everyone wins in the end and it’s the perfect book to start me on my summer holidays (even though I am a bit late this year).

Golden Healer, Dark Enchantress Excerpt from Chapter 1, "Curiosity"

"I pushed my hair behind my ear like I always did whenever I was very nervous and unsure what to say.

"Um..." I stammered.

"What is that?"

His voice turned suddenly sharp, and I realized the mistake I'd just made.

"Nothing," I said, trying to pull my hair back over my shoulder.

"Oh, no, you don't," he said firmly. "Look at me."

Reluctantly, I flipped the hair back and turned towards him.

I could see his green eyes flaring wildly as he hissed, "Who did this to you?"

"Aaryn, it's okay," I said quietly as I looked down at my lap.

"Okay? It most certainly is not. Now you tell me who's done this to you. Was it
Oric? If that jerk's come back, I'll--"

"Aaryn, it wasn't Oric," I said, looking up at him.

His temper calmed and melted into concern as he noted the sorrow in my eyes.

"Chrystine," he said gently. "Tell me. Who is it?"

I hesitated, then said softly, "It's my dad."

For a moment that seemed to last a very long time, he just stared at me. Then he said slowly, "Your dad?"

"Yes."

"How long."

"About two years."

More silent staring. He looked both shocked and struggling to keep his temper under control at the same time. "Sarah and Grace?"

"They know."

"Why didn't you ever tell me?"

The question didn't sound angry, but a touch of hurt tainted his beautiful voice.

"I was afraid of what you might do."

More silence. And then, "Is it very bad?"

"No," I lied. I dared not tell him it was getting worse.

"Isn't there somewhere else you could go?" "Where?"

"You could live with us," he said, and at first I was surprised, but his eyes showed his sincerity.

"No, I couldn't," I said softly.

"Yes, you could. I could talk to my parents. They'd understand."

I hardly knew what to say. Aaryn had always gone out of his way to protect me, but this...

"Please don't say anything," I said. "Not to anyone. If I decide otherwise, I'll tell you, but for now, please don't."

His flickering eyes reflected his struggle, but he said, "Alright, I won't do anything. For now."

Another moment of silence passed between us, and then it was followed by another moment that I shall never forget.

His earnest green gaze pierced into mine as he said softly, "If you ever need me, just call, and I'll be there. If he ever...if you're ever afraid that something might...happen, I'll be there to protect you."

I shivered as his hand crept up to caress my face. I shivered for two reasons: it was the first time he'd ever touched me, and his hand was unexpectedly cold. He suddenly withdrew as if reading my thoughts. He turned away and jumped up quickly.

"I have to get to class," he muttered.

"Okay," I said. "Do you want me to walk with you? Our class was pushed back an hour again."

"No," he said quickly, and a bit more harshly than usual.

I would have been offended by his harsh tone, but I could tell by that familiar scowl that he was annoyed with himself, not with me.

"No," he repeated more gently. "I'll be fine. See you tonight?" He smiled, trying to lighten the mood.

"Sure," I said and watched as he walked off. Then I sat staring at the wall for a few moments, trying to grasp what had just happened. Aaryn caressed my face, and it had sent a thrill to my heart. Yet it had also sent a chill through my skin; what could these things mean? Could the girls be right? Could he really like me? But why was he so cautious about touching me? Everyone had cold hands from time to time, I tried to reason. Mine were nearly always cold. And yet, his were cold in a somehow strange, unsettling way.

I broke out of my reverie as I felt the seat beside me; something smooth and cool lay beside me. I looked down. It was his leather jacket.

I don't know why I didn't think to wait to give it to him until the next day.
Something inside me just made me grab that jacket and spring off the bench, racing down the hall, hoping I could catch him in time.

I rushed outside; he was several yards in the distance already, but I knew he'd be able to hear me; he always did somehow, no matter how far away I was. One of his unique special abilities of course--heightened senses.

I called his name. As he stepped from the shade of the tree, he stumbled. As if seeing him falter wasn't jarring enough, the sprinkler he tripped over sprayed water all over him, and his white skin transformed into a brilliant shade of green. He came to a dead halt, stiff as stone. His face reflected anger at his blunder. Now I understood why he never wanted me to follow him in the rain--unless he carried an over-sized umbrella big enough for the two of us. The non-magical folk gawking at him would brush the transformation off as a "fairy or elf thing".

He stood still a few moments, as if contemplating what to do. He knew I'd seen him, of course. Then he smiled, but shadows stirred in his powerful green eyes; he had not intended for me to see him like this."

Ooo this is where Chrystine comes to realise there is more than meets the eye with Aaryn..well more than what she first thought anyway."

Excerpt

"Dillon’s knobby hands scratched his scrubby gray beard. Index finger curled, he motioned for Sharay to join him at his table.

Sharay hesitated. The old man pointed to the spread of cards before him and chuckled. He held one up for her to see, and furtively laid it back down again. Curious, Sharay stood and scuffled across the room, the closest she could come to walking while on her medicine, making her way past the vacant gaze of a middle aged female patient. She sat in a worn wooden chair across from the old man, the table and mysterious cards between them.

“Dillon.” He proffered his weather beaten hand in welcome. “Dillon Emrys. Born in the North of Wales, high in the mountains in a town no one has ever heard of. Born and raised there.” His voice was deep but carried the musical lilt of a heavy Welsh accent.

Sharay extended her hand and watched it tremor. Another side-effect of her medicine. She quickly withdrew it, embarrassed.

“The shaking is nothing to be ashamed of. Easy to remedy. Here, try again.” Dillon’s hand hung over the cards, waiting for hers.

Timidly, Sharay offered her hand again. She was surprised at the strength of the old man’s grip. He pressed his thumb against the top of her index finger and held on as if he awaited a return gesture.

“Ah, I thought perhaps you remembered the greeting of the ancients, but sadly not.”

Sharay leaned her head to the side, wiped the drool from her mouth against her shoulder, leaving a wet stain on her sweater. The old man must be crazy, she thought.

“Sure, some call me crazy. Others call me wise.” Dillon smiled, a full grin this time. Two dimples appeared in his deeply creviced face.

Sharay pulled her hand away, her eyes opened wide. How did he know what she was thinking?

“Nothing to be afraid of. Anyone can learn to read another’s thoughts. You’ve done it sometimes, too.”

Sharay didn’t answer. She wondered if she could get away from Dillon without creating a scene.

“All right, I’ll give you this piece of advice, and then maybe you’ll trust me.” Dillon leaned in close to Sharay. “Cheek your medicine,” he whispered.

“What?”

“Cheek it. Take the medicine in your mouth, roll it with your tongue to the back of your cheek, near to your gums. Nurse will check your mouth but won’t see it. Then spit it out when she leaves.” Dillon leaned back, obviously pleased with himself.

“Nurse won’t see it?”

“No. Just do it. It will stop that silly drooling of yours.”

Sharay giggled nervously. Of course. It was so simple. “How did you learn to do that?”

Dillon shrugged and stroked his beard. “I know many things. Take this card for example.” He held up the card he had tried to show her before.

“Tarot cards,” Sharay said, recognizing the trump from a similar deck her mother had allowed her to play with as a child.

The cards were divinatory. When shuffled and laid out in a pattern, they could be interpreted, often giving readings that made accurate and profound pronouncements about one’s life situation.

Sharay took the card he offered her. Its edges were worn, the colors faded. It showed the picture of a young man and woman facing each other with hands clasped, standing under a rose trellis and being blessed by a hooded figure of a Goddess. The word LOVERS was printed across the bottom of the card. Sharay felt a fluttering in her womb, as if the card fanned the flames of the burnt out embers of her inner strength there. She had almost forgotten about this power spot in her body, hadn’t felt its heat since the day she met Dr. Deluth a full six months ago.

“Yes, Tarot. But this is a very old deck, a special deck. That card is for you. Keep it with you. Sleep with it under your pillow.” Dillon lowered his voice. “Don’t show it to anyone else.”

Sharay touched the outline of the figures with her fingers, inexplicably intrigued by the faded picture.

Dillon coughed. Sharay looked up to see Dr. Deluth walk toward her, clip board in hand, two interns following obediently behind. She shoved the card under her sweater and tucked it inside her bra. Dillon laid a magazine across the top of his card spread, his movements betraying none of the anxiety Sharay felt whenever she saw Dr. Deluth."

I love this scene. I think Dillon has got to be one of my favourite characters from this book after reading this excerpt. Reminds me how funny Dillon was in the book and how he made Sharay feel sane.

I loved the characters in this book, especially the female and male protagonists, Chrystine and Aaryn. Chrystine is an elf living in the human world where bumping into other fantasy and supernatural creatures is the norm. Aaryn is Chrystine’s neighbor and they soon become firm friends along with Chrystine’s other friends, Grace and Sarah (humans). Life is as normal as it can be until Chrystine’s birthday when he father gives her a gift that pin points her as a target for the Dark Enchantress.

I really enjoyed the plot of this book but at the same time it was a very predictable plot for me personally. I think this book would be more suits to young teens. I loved Schulze’s take on vampires and their history. It was very unique and look forward to reading more about them in ‘Tears of a Vampire Prince’.

Carry On The Flame: Destiny’s Call is the first book in the ‘Goddess of the Stars and the Sea’ series by Jodine Turner. Fast paced journey of self discovery with a side order of romance to boot.

Sharay is one of the most strongest heroines I have come across in a while. Not only does she bounce back from her drug induced existence for the past six months but she steps up to the challenge to help her sistren and brethren against the forces of evil (and Aunt Phoebe).

Guethyn is a sweetheart. He is a very reluctant participant in his uncle’s magical journey but soon his calling is awakened in him and he steps up to his part in Shary’s destiny. Dillon (Guethyn’s uncle) is brilliant. I love his witty repertoire and interaction with Rosheen. He is a very strong character and faces any challenge head on.

I enjoyed reading this book because of the different use of magic and history behind it. I am not a religious person at all but I like that fact that authors are intertwining religion in with their stories as long as it’s not over the top. There were a few moments where I didn’t understand what was going on at all and I think that was because it was such an implosion of information to me and I just don’t think I could get my head around it. I’m not sure it’s a series that I would continue reading but I would certainly recommend it to the right reader.

"I could hear uniformed chanting, and I realized it was a spell of some sort that was increasing in volume, but my mind couldn’t grasp what words were being said.

When we stopped circling the fire, I noticed the hooded individual next to Vance pulled out another needle and injected him once again. He didn’t protest or try to stop them, so I figured he was just as hazy as I was.

The circle parted, and the two of us were led out of it.

We walked a small distance on the exposed hill, guided by our handlers before we entered a thickly wooded area.

Our guides continued on this way with us until we reached a very small clearing in the trees that was lit by a few small torches. I could see a makeshift mattress, made of straw and covered in blankets, that was on a small wooden platform. Some thin poles held a twig canopy over the top of the bed, and red and green ribbons were hanging from it twisting together in the light warm breeze of the evening.

The two of us were led over to the bed where our companions had us sit down.

I realized Fiona had been the person at my side when she leaned over to whisper into my ear.

“Seduce your lover,” was all she said, her voice penetrating clearly through the fog of my mind, before she and the other figure backed away, and we were left there all alone.

I sat still for a moment as her words sank in. In the fuzzy state of my brain I knew something was wrong, but I couldn’t remember what it was.

I turned to look at Vance for help, but I couldn’t see his face under the hood, so I lifted my arms and pushed it back from him.

My breath caught in my throat.

Has he always been this handsome? The soft firelight lit his chiseled features to perfection as he looked back at me. I knew I had to kiss him.

I leaned forward, gently placing my lips against his mouth, tenderly sighing at the contact with him.

Suddenly it was as if my touch awakened a raging inferno inside him.

His bright eyes instantly sprang to life, as if fire were racing through them, and he yanked me toward him in a crushing grip against his hard strong body, without breaking the kiss.

I responded equally to him, wrapping my arms around his neck, deepening the kiss as much as possible, and I was vaguely aware of the sound of my voice moaning in response to him.

His hands were tangled in my long hair, and he roughly grabbed it, jerking my head to the side, trailing love bites and kisses down the side of my face to my neck, and I lifted my chin higher to give him better access.

I could feel him move his hands, sliding them to my waist, working to release the knotted rope.

The thought flashed through my mind that we shouldn’t be doing this, but I lost it as my hands found their way against the bare rippling muscles of his chest when his robe slid off his shoulders.

He tossed me back onto the straw mattress, continuing his trail of kisses over my feverish skin as the firelight danced over us.

All night long he made love to me, over and over again, unable to stop, until we finally collapsed—exhausted—into a deep sleep."

Wowweee!!! Some hot stuff going on right there! So what about you guys..have you ever been so lost in a situation that you have abandoned all your senses?

I do it ALL the time LOL especially when I am reading, I tend to get lost in the story and when someone talks to me, they either get a bunch of gibberish because I haven't been listening properly or I just outright ignore them.

Guest Post: Romance and the Supernatural by L.M. Pruitt

"Romance is tricky. Period. What’s romantic for one person is by no means romantic for the next. Some women go nuts over flowers. I know that they’ll be dead within a matter of days, most likely because I have a toxic hand with plants. I’ve killed bamboo before, so I’m not joking. Chocolate? Meh. Depends on my mood in general. But you buy me the book I’ve been salivating over and haven’t gotten to buy for whatever reason? There’s a good chance I’ll forgive your transgression or just forget about it completely.

Clearly, I’m somewhat untraditional.

One of the more memorable moments in the movie Legion (which has almost no romance) is when Gabriel and Michael are battling toward the end. Gabriel asks why/how Michael is there/not dead. Michael replies (forgive the para-quotation), “You gave Him what he wanted. I gave Him what he needed.” Now, obviously in real life situations someone isn’t going to kill/save the human race on your whim, but the point is the same.

It’s far easier to give someone what they want than what they need. Wants are usually very easy and more likely to be material or physical. Flowers, champagne, diamonds – even when they’re meant, they’re quick fixes to the inherent problem or situation. Heck, don’t get me wrong. If I could have someone drop a bucket load of money in my lap, tax-free, and say, “Do with it what you will,” I’d be ecstatic.

However, I don’t need it. Before you go psycho and ask what’s wrong with me, let me explain.

If you gave me a bucket of money, I’d do a lot of responsible things. I’d pay off all my debt, pay off my mom’s debt, get her a place to live, myself a place to live, set up college funds for a variety of people, endow a scholarship… you get the point. But after that, well, I’d be lazy for a while. Which is never in my best interests. I do the worst things every when I’m bored and feeling lazy. It’s like my mind demands amusement and the only way to achieve it is through wrecking some part of my life.

So a bucket of money? Not good.

The same principle applies in romance. The man who gives you everything you want is good, for the short haul at least. But what about when it comes to meeting basic needs, like trust, respect, love? If someone is inclined to take the easy way to generate emotions, I’d be likely to say those emotions won’t last long. But the man who gives you what you need, even if you don’t want it, even if you hate it? There’s moral fiber there, someone to turn to in the middle of the night to help you fight your demons and to walk next to in the day to face more mundane problems.

I would rather have someone who makes me face my problems, makes me face myself, than someone who placates me with a box of chocolates. I can trust he’ll be there, no matter what, which is a helluva lot better than chocolates.

Especially since most of those chocolate box sets are full of weirdness."

Hear hear, I totally agree with you. My man makes me face my demons instead of hiding away, he's there when I want to talk about stuff that is bugging me and he is there for me - through thick and thin. I think if I was with a guy that just placated me and gave me stuff I wanted, well he would be out of money very quickly, hehe!!

Not just the breathtakingly delicious blood that flowed through her veins. I had the pleasure of tasting a little of it when I healed the wounds that Alex had inflicted on her. What had me entranced was the strength of her convictions, the saucy way she tossed harsh words at those she feared the most. Her courage, her voice, her hidden insecurities.

Every little fanciful thought that had ever passed through my mind about the girl suddenly rushed over me as I stood there in the darkness on that road. She stood there, hiding nothing. The expression she wore tore holes through me with its honesty. I might have drawn her away at that moment. It would have only taken a gentle word or two, but I felt powerless.

If a woman was rendered nearly unconscious due to the effects of an incredible orgasm, she was less likely to feel alarmed when my teeth sank into her flesh. Compulsion is one of my abilities, but I use it sparingly. Perhaps it is one of my few moral qualms.

I love this excerpt, it's quite a emotional scene and I love how Michael is so thoughtful in his feeding habit. I think this is where Michael really shows his true colours underneath his cold vampire exterior. Sarah is his weakness..what's yours?

Blood of the White Witch is the third book in the Of Witches and Warlocks series by Lacey Weatherford. This instalment in the series is full of action, passion and love. Best of all, it’s set in Scotland.

Portia and Vance are still overcoming their ordeal with Damien Cummings (Vance’s father) from The Demon Kiss. Vance decides he wants to dig deeper into the confession that Darcy had made regarding his mother and his father’s family. This takes them on a journey to Scotland where they find more than they had bargained for.

I absolutely loved this book. Vance was his usual sexy and awesome self and Portia was sort of taking a bit of a back seat in this story, but we do see her powers developing. This book was more about Vance looking into his family history and Portia, being part of his family, was there every step of the way for support. Sometimes delving into the unknown can lead to good things, but unfortunately for our hero and heroine, something always goes wrong. Vance learns more about why his father was performing the demonic rituals on him when he was a child and the heritage that comes with it. Portia also learns more about herself in this book but what she finds out is the cause for landing her and Vance in their predicament half way through the book.

My heart actually broke at the end of this book. It was such a heart wrenching cliff hanger to be left on but it builds immense suspense and a brilliant set up for the next book in the series, The Dark Rising. My favourite moment in this book had to be when Vance and Portia newly got to Scotland and involves some sexy Scottish attire.

Overall, loved this book and love the series. Vance and Portia’s story is timeless and I would recommend everyone to pick the series up and have a go. You won’t be disappointed.

Shades of Gray is the first installment in the Jude Magdalyn series by LM Pruitt. Words can’t describe how brilliant this book was. There was action, romance, a bit of smut and heartbreak: the makings of an awesome story.

Jude Magdalyn Henries is just your average girl trying to make a living in the streets of New Orleans, be it hustling or setting up a scam, it puts food on the table and pays the bills. But all that changes after a scam goes wrong and Jude is on the run when she stumbles head first into an ongoing war: a war that she is at the centre of. From this encounter, Jude goes on to learn more about her heritage and all the goodies that come with it.

I can’t rant and rave enough about this book. I absolutely loved it from the get go, the story is unlike anything I have read before. Yes it’s supernaturally based but the story itself and how it unfolds is different, it kept things interesting. I thought I knew what Jude would do next, but every time I thought I knew what Jude would do next, I was wrong. Jude is a very unpredictable, outspoken and kind character. Her attitude gets her into trouble most of the time but sometimes it’s useful. No story would be complete without a love interest or two and Jude has some choices. Albeit the choice Jude made threw me, but I loved that this character could keep me guessing about what is going to happen next. The love interests themselves are some fine specimens and I don’t think I have ever been this jealous of a fictional character in my life, but I am.

Overall, just brilliant!! I can’t wait for the next book in the series, Shades of Desire. I highly recommend this book to anyone, but maybe not of any age. I would say mid-teen and upwards. LM Pruitt, you rock for writing this book!

The Vampire’s Curse is the second installment in the ‘Undead in Brown County’ series by S.J. Wright. This addition to the series is jam packed with excitement. There’s the unexpected appearance of Sarah’s undead mother, a steamy love triangle and a power struggle going on.

Sarah is coming to terms with the task, of being a warden, that was left to her by her father but I think she is beginning to become a little bit overwhelmed by it all. It’s all still surreal to her and she can’t believe that her mother is still alive. It really knocks her self esteem. She also has to deal with the guilt of making a life or death decision for her friend Alex. Her decision comes back to bite her on the butt.

Michael’s presence still makes Sarah pretty jittery but she begins to grow closer to him and begins to trust him. Not sure if it’s a wise decision but in the heat of the moment, she has to decide whether she can trust an incarcerated vampire under her watch or trust a vampire that she gave her all to and was nearly sucked dry because of it.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a great addition to the series and gives you a bit more of an insight into Michael’s past and how he came to be in the field. We learn more about Alex’s past and connection to Sarah’s mother that was mentioned in ‘The Vampire’s Warden’. I loved the scene with Sarah and Trevor. Her cocky attitude had me cheering for her in the background hoping she would wipe the floor with him.

I think my favourite moment was near the end between Sarah and Michael. It was at that moment that all charades between them were dropped. It was quite magical reading this scene. I loved that Sarah couldn’t help but dip back into her usual defensive cocky attitude with him though. It makes the interaction between the two characters much more entertaining to read.

Overall, loved the book and would recommend it to anyone who has read ‘The Vampire’s Curse’ and enjoyed it. It would be ideal if the reader read the first book before reading this one although S.J. Wright does give a good narrative that would inform readers of any important information that would be needed to comprehend what was going on in ‘The Vampire’s Curse’.

Portia Mullins is your typical teenage girl. She loves hanging out with her best friend Shelly and spending time with her family. But now that her sixteenth birthday approaches it means she can start dating and boy does she pick the good ones. Not only that but she uncovers that she is also a witch.

Vance Mangum is the local bad boy. He rides a motorcycle and is drop dead gorgeous and not only that but the boy is seriously gifted. I don’t mean he is an underachiever, I mean he has some seriously awesome talent because he is a…warlock. Vance is over excited that it’s Portia’s sixteenth birthday because it means he can finally get to know her instead of admiring her from a distance.

Well, what can I say? This is my second time reading this book and I still love it. All the added extra scenes was definitely worth the re-print. My favourite part of the book was the prologue, this is a new section that was added to the book. I loved it because it was all from Vance’s perspective which was awesome. I think the first time I read the book I didn’t fully comprehend Vance’s feelings from Portia but this opening chapter explains it all and it made me realize how much he had to go through staying away from her for all that time and then eventually being able to let out all that pent up love.

I don’t think there were any parts of the book that I disliked. There was one moment, but I wouldn’t say I disliked it. It’s essential to the book plot and set up for the next book but it doesn’t make it pleasant. Tugged at my heart strings it did. Lacey sure knows how to build up the drama. Although I was giggling at certain parts.
Overall, brilliant book and I would highly recommend to anyone that is interested in reading about witches.

Portia has come a long way in her short time that she has discovered that she is a witch. She finds the love of her life, he is partially demon due to an incomplete transformation, got married to said love of her life and has been the recipient of a serious mojo power called the ‘The Awakening’. But none of that matters when your husband, bad-ass and gorgeous Vance Mangum, is killed.

I really felt for Portia in this book. She has been ripped apart by magic, the one thing that brought her and Vance together. It was so devastating. Then when things look like they are on the up-side for Portia, Lacey goes and ruins it all by flipping it to the dark side.

I had some serious issues with a certain character in this book most of the way through. One minute I was like, “aww, sweet”, and the next I was about ready to tear them to pieces. I think this book had a bit of bi-polar effect on me. I hated it but loved it at the same time. For the record, I don’t mean hate the book, I mean that the writing connects with me so much that I feel like I am Portia. I love reading books where I can get that caught up and lost in the character’s emotions and personal story that I feel like it’s happening to me. It means a book has actually touched me and it will always stay with me.

There was a new type of magic introduced in this book and I thought it was quite funky an innovative. I had never really thought of this type of magic being incorporated into this series but it works so well. So watch out for Hex. That’s all I am saying about that.

Overall, brilliant addition to the series and it has strengthened my love for the series (not that I was ever in doubt of it) but it has also made me slightly annoyed at the author as she well knows for that cliffhanger - Mrs Weatherford..you got some explaining to do! Hehe, just kidding, I am sure it will all unravel in the next book. Which might I add, I am giddy over and can’t wait to read.

Without Mercy is Belinda Boring’s debut novelette in the Mystic Wolves series. Bel is an amazing person and I am so excited for her and her new career as an author. She is an awesome writer as you will get to know if you read her work.

Without Mercy is a short story introducing you to the pack of wolves that are the centre of this urban fantasy series. From the very beginning, this story is action packed and had me filled with intrigue as to where the story would lead. I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to read what the characters did next and what the outcome would be.

My favourite part was when Darcy was shielding Jasmine. To me, this set Darcy aside from the very beginning as the heroine in this story. Not only is she strong but she is also brave. I can’t say there were any parts of the story that I hated as I loved it all..although there was certain scene that tug at my heart strings. Damn you Bel!

And when we meet Mason..wowzee!! I had to be careful that I didn’t drool. He had me swooning from the offset. Darcy you are one lucky girl. I especially loved the interaction between Darcy and Mason near the end. I don’t want to say too much as it would give the story away but it’s very cute and heart felt.

Overall, great introduction to a series that I know I will be following all the way through. You guys should definitely check this out!

Today, as part of a book blog tour, I have the pleasure of interviewing Stephanie Wright aka SJ Wright, author of 'The Vampire Warden' - first book in the 'Undead In Brown County' series, right here on the blog. I am a stay-at-home Mom with two growing boys, an overworked husband and a very devoted Jack Russell terrier named Shelby. I grew up in small city called Mishawaka, Indiana and the majority of my family live in the Indianapolis area. I now live with my wonderful boys, my husband and sort-of-annoying dog in Little Elm, Texas. The Vampire's Warden is the first book I have ever put up for sale.

1. Describe ‘The Vampire Warden’ in one word.

Unique.

2. What was the best part of the experience behind writing your own novel?

When I started this book, I had a lot of anger inside me regarding my own life as a child. By channelling that repressed anger through Sarah, I’ve begun to let go of it and look at things differently.

3. Why did you decide to go down the route of self publishing?

When I saw what Amanda Hocking was able to achieve, I knew that I could make it work. I finally stopped giving in to my fear over what publishers or agents would think of my story and realized that there were probably readers out there who wanted a fresh perspective on the vampire genre.

4. How many books are going to be in the 'Undead in Brown County' series?

At the moment, I’m considering doing a total of three books for the series.

5. What is your favourite scene/chapter in ‘The Vampire Warden’?

My favourite scene is probably the first conversation that Sarah has with Michael in the meadow.

6. Which of your characters is most/least like you, and in what way?

Sarah is very different than I am, as far as her instinct to immediately push the envelope when she gets upset with someone. I tend to avoid confrontation. That’s another reason I really loved writing about her.

7. Are any of the characters in your book based on anyone from your life?

Yes. But I will refrain from naming names. Trevor Kincaid is based on an ex-boyfriend.

8. What is your favourite read of the year so far?

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. It’s beyond great. It’s better than Twilight.

The Rational Appeal of Supernatural Books

As a reader, I tend to get into these grooves during which I only want to read a specific type of book for, like, months on end. Lately (as in, for the past year or so), if a book doesn’t have a supernatural element—like a vampire, demon, fae, sorcerer, whateverer—I can’t…um…sink my teeth into it.

There once was a time when I could read conventional chick lit without any supernatural goodies or badies and be perfectly content but now, I want funny, sexy, romantic and otherworldy to scratch all my itches. (Okay, really, could I have used a grosser analogy than that?)

Recently, I began wondering about this change because, since I’ll be turning 36 this year, I feel like my tastes should be getting more practical and less fantastical but my reading preferences seem to be pulling me the other way. I can’t help but wonder if it isn’t the age thing that’s really causing this. After all, the older I get, the more I have to face my own mortality. And you know what supernatural characters have in common? Immortality or, in the very least, a super long lifespan.

But another way that age might be affecting my reading choices is that the older you get, the more you realize that…oh, how do I put this…life is boring. Well, maybe not always but it is a bit—predictable. So why wouldn’t I want to pick up a book that has a reality no one could see as boring and events that I can’t possibly predict?

Every reader, obviously, is different. Each will have their own reading quirks, favorite genres and irrefutable reasons why they are completely devoted to that genre. For me? Gimme something funny, with a bit of bite, and a sexy otherworldly live-forever type, and I’m happier than a human chick lying in a pile of sexy vampires. Well…almost.

Dreamwalk Blog Tour: Interview with Sarah MacManus

Today on the blog, I have the brilliant Sarah MacManus, author of the awesome novel 'Dreamwalk' (my review here), who has kindly stopped by to answer some of my weird, wacky and wonderful questions (hopefully she thought so too LOL).

Anyway, before we get started with the interview, let me introduce you;

Sarah MacManus makes things up and then writes them down. She lives in the middle of the United States, but feels at home anywhere with a river. In the mundane world, she works as a freelance technical writer.

In SarahSpace, she spends her time rescuing princes from ravening monsters, restoring ancient races to their rightful place and making secret, shameful wishes come true.

Sarah loves the East Village, indie music, Cornish pasties, the smell of rain, Spitalfields, biochemistry and all shades of blue.

Sarah's work has appeared in the literary journal The Battered Suitcase and she has a poem forthcoming in an anthology from Little Episodes.

Right..interview time =)

1. With such a variety of subjects available to write about, what made you choose to write about romance with such a serious undertone?

I admit, I had been planning for Dreamwalk to be a lot lighter and fluffier. The main character, Chloe, was very loosely based on a friend of mine. She died very suddenly and tragically (and far too young) while I was writing the first draft. After that, the book took on a much darker tone. Once I was actually able to work on it again, the story wanted to go somewhere deeper than just happy-ever-after.

Loving is a very important part of life, but not everyone gets their happy ending. And some people find themselves having to keep love alive through some very dire circumstances, financial hardship, addiction and even after death. Once the glamour of romance wears off, all that’s really left is the determination to express love and to act with love. I think that’s the most important thing – to decide to do that despite the dire circumstances, and that’s where the story wanted to take me.

2. What kind of research did you need to do for Dreamwalk?

I had to do quite a bit, actually. The Australian mythology for starters; although I was vaguely familiar with it. I read some fascinating work by Dr. Diane Bell, who delved deeply into the feminine side of the culture and wrote about it in an accessible way. The ancestor gods in the book are all significant to areas of personal growth and enlightenment in that culture.

I had to do geographical research as well. Although I’ve lived in both New York and St. Louis, I wasn’t as familiar with some of the areas that I wanted to write about and I was completely unfamiliar with Australia. I need to look up the statutes for liquor licenses and serving hours for New York. I needed to know if driving from Adelaide to Alice Springs was a feasible one-day trip. I also needed to know if these places would produce these characters.

And of course, I had to do research on heroin use, I now know more about heroin than I’d ever imagined knowing, because I wanted to understand it, so I could understand Shane. And I wanted it to be realistic and rooted in the science of neurochemistry, not the horror story propaganda that you see. The brain receptors for heroin are the same ones that use naturally produced endorphins to block pain while we fight or flee from danger. I had to know how it worked in the human brain, and why it’s so addictive, I needed to know how it was administered, I needed to make sure that Chloe didn’t use it enough to become addicted herself, and what they would give Shane at the hospital when he overdosed. I talked with people that have used heroin and some that have had a lot of trouble coming off. People with mental and emotional problems often use drugs to self-medicate their condition, which is what Shane was doing.

3. Which of your characters is most like you and why?

Probably Trish. I’m not a dedicated activist, but I do hold some very firm views about natural preservation. Trish is also kind of cynical and likes to emphasise the irony in situations. Trish is quite sardonic. She’s always giving advice and usually assumes that she’s going to have to be responsible for fixing things when they go wrong. For awhile there, she doesn’t want to do it anymore, but eventually she realises that no one but herself put her in that predicament and that’s the future she chose for herself and it’s the right one.

4. Do you have a favourite scene/chapter from Dreamwalk? If so, what is it and why?

If I had to pick one, I think the scene with Boris in the shower is my favourite. I’m not entirely sure why, except that it’s the most obviously comic scene in the book. And to be honest, I like Shane best when he’s being a little devilish. It’s nice to see him having a go at Boris and not being the self-loathing emo kid once in a while. It was also fun to see him being completely derailed at the end. Although Shane has a lot of flaws, he’s definitely one of my favourite characters, and it was fun to see him stripped of a lot of his self-protective attitudes and mechanisms in that scene.

5. Do you have a favourite place to go to read/write?

Not really. I normally do all my writing in my home office, with some music blaring. I’m not stuck on a place, really, but I do have to have the fan going and I have to be wearing flip flops, for whatever it’s worth. And coffee. I require lots and lots of coffee.

6. Describe your book in three words.

Surreal. Complex. Romantic.

Little Episodes

When Naomi asked me if I wanted to do a guest post for her blog, I wanted to take the opportunity to help promote my favorite non-profit org, Little Episodes. Little Eps is an arts community currently based in London that works to promote artists, writers, poets and performers. It was started a few years ago by actress Lucie Barât, and the whole crew works to help get writers published, get performers onstage and get artist’s work scene.

I ‘met’ Lucie online back in 2008 when we both had short stories in the same issue of an online journal called “The Battered Suitcase.” When she told me about her vision for Little Episodes, I was instantly taken and of course I volunteered to help out. She wanted to produce a volume of short stories and poetry that let writers express the ups and downs, the depression, addiction and other life-numbing, art-killing problems of working in the arts industry. Who knew better than us how it can wear you down, trying to make a living in an unsympathetic industry?

Over the last three years, that volumes of prose and poetry has grown into a vibrant organization. The anthologies themselves have featured work from renowned poet Todd Swift, award winning author Melvin Burgess and actress Sadie Frost.

Little Episodes has a monthly club night in London, where writers, artists, poets and performers can meet up, socialize, network and share their work through performance and collaboration. Our club nights have featured emerging music artists like Kieran Leonard and The Penny Ballads, as well as better known performers like Carl Barât (Lucie’s brother) and most recently, Adam Ant.

Little Episodes has an online community where artists can share and promote their work, learn from each other, get support and develop friendships that make the life with an uncertain calling less stressful and more fun. It’s open to the public and anyone can join and everyone is welcome to the events. So if you just like to read, or are just starting to think about writing, painting, or playing, you’ll be welcome.

Soon to come is a café in Brighton, with food and drink, bookshop, wifi, poetry readings, performances and art workshops.

1. What was the inspiration behind In The Storm?

It all started with a thunderstorm when I was living on the East Coast. I absolutely love them, and thought about creating a world where it stormed all of the time, as a reflection of someone’s inner torment. As a child I thought storms were nature’s way of expressing emotion, and thought it was original enough idea to give it a shot.

2. Are Carly and Morgan based on anyone you know?

Carly’s anger is based on my own as a child. I wanted her to be a strong protagonist, as it seems many female protagonists are sort of idle, and wait for someone to sweep them off their feet, or fix everything. (However this is changing in YA more recently.) Morgan was not someone I really planned, but rather developed himself as the story progressed. I grew to really like the kid.

3. If you could escape to another world, what would yours be like?

Mine would be the storm world I wrote about. My only other obsession is the beach. It would definitely be a combination of the two, but a happier ocean that the one I describe in the novella. Storms and oceans can be so aggressively beautiful and have so much expression. The perfect personification of anger.

4. What is your favourite scene/quote from In The Storm and why?

I love my description of the stars and the moon as a hammock. For some reason I tend to think of those words a lot; they stuck with me the most. Also, The ending of the last chapter before the epilogue. It breaks my heart every time. That’s when I fall in love with my own character.

5. Did you learn anything whilst writing In The Storm? If so, what?

I learned that the inspiration just smacks you out of nowhere. I have no idea how many times I thought about what writing a book would be like. I never thought it would write itself in a week and surprise me so much. Even now some of those words don’t even seem like I wrote them. It’s an amazing experience.

6. If you could sit down with any fictional character for a spot of tea, who would it be and why?

Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. I am so in love with him!

Sarah Brightman is an independent and strong willed young woman. Her mother left her and her sister when she was little and now their father has died. The family business, a bed and breakfast, has been passed over to Sarah whilst her sister, Katie, continues her studies at a college far from home.

After their father’s death, Sarah finds out a lot more than she thought she knew like the fact that she has been living right next two vampires her entire life. With the help of Nelly, her exuberant and serious employee, and Alex, a wayward stranger that seems to know a lot about Sarah’s missing mother, she finds out all about her heritage.

I really enjoyed this book. I’m not sure which vampire’s side I am on though. Both are gorgeous, charismatic, charming and endearing. Michael has this way of winning you over and making you think that he has done nothing wrong, whereas the other vampire has been nothing but helpful to Sarah but at the same time keeping a lot of secrets from her that she ends up figuring out on her own and blowing up about.

My favourite moments were the flashbacks that Sarah got. I also thought it was brilliant that Sarah wasn’t all too gullible to believe that vampire’s existed right off the bat. She needed some convincing which I found quite realistic. I know I certainly wouldn’t believe that vampires existed just because I read it in a book. Pretty sure if I did, people would think I was a lunatic and cart me off to the nut house. I can’t say I disliked any parts from the book. Everything seemed to flow easily and was a nice light read.

Overall, I would recommend this book to everyone except for young children. Excellent read for a teenager and young adult enthusiasts alike.

Chloe Hawthorn is still reeling from her mother’s death when her father moves her to a new city, away from everything that she has even known. To top it all off she has the most awful nightmares. Trish, Chloe’s best friend from St Louis, sends her a clip of a boy playing a guitar. Chloe becomes obsessed with this boy, Shane, and has very vivid dreams about him. But are they really dreams? You need to read the book to find out.

I had so many favourite moments in this book. Firstly, I loved the characters; they are so life like and easy to relate to. Their life is like so many other people’s out there. I think that’s why I enjoyed it so much, it’s very different from what I have been reading lately because this could be anyone’s lives that MacManus is describing and this is what, I think, makes the book a bitter sweet brilliance. One of the more scary moments in the book is actually one of my own personal fears but it blends well with the story and is essential to aid Chloe in her journey. I don’t want to say what it is as it may ruin some of the story for you but I can tell you that I wouldn’t wish it on my own worst enemy.

I could go on about this book all day, it was that brilliant. It definitely goes up there as one of my favourite books this year. After starting reading this book, I don’t know if this is a coincidence or not, but I have had some amazing and vivid dreams that I can remember in detail the next day.

Overall, brilliant read, would highly recommend it to any adults out there and possibly the more mature teen. There is certain content that would not be suitable for younger teens.

Josie works in a bridal shop, the worst place to meet the man of her dreams. The only thing is the man of her dreams isn’t technically a man - he’s a vampire. All of Josie’s dreams come true when she is invited to a vampire party. This could be her chance to meet Mr Right..fangs and all.

Well not only does Josie land up dating one vampire, but she ends up dating another one too. Gregory is the vampire of Josie’s dreams; gorgeous, rich and a gentleman. Walker is the exact opposite of what she is looking for; a smoker and awful and rude to women. Who does she end up with? Well I will let you read that to find out.

My favourite part of the book was the ending where Josie realised who Mr Right for her is. She has been on a rollercoaster of a ride and to be honest, I was a bit confused as to who she should trust. There is one sex scene in this book and I must admit it is rather hot, so if hot and steamy scenes are your thing, you will love this book. Josie constantly has sex with vampires on the brain. She is so quirky and lovable as a character. I also loved the detailed explanations as to how the vampires in Lafont’s novel had to stay away from the sun etc. Brilliantly executed.

Overall, thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I would definitely recommend it to my friends and fellow bloggers. It’s a nice short read and has all the right elements that is needed in a vampire romance. Can’t wait for the next instalment.

Nightshade is the first book in the ‘Witch War Series’ by Andrea Cremer. Well this is one of those books that you just can’t put down. Every time I did, I have to pick it straight back up again.

Calla Tor is the alpha of the Nightshade pack, well the alpha of the underage wolfs that is. She is betrothed to an alpha of another pack and after their marriage they will form a new pack. This has been highly anticipated and everyone is making sure that it happens as planned. But Calla has other ideas.

I felt so sorry for Calla. She has been told all her life what awaits in her future and she has no choice in it at all. Some of the time it doesn’t bother her, she is kind of giddy about the whole marriage and being leader of a pack thing but at the same time she yearns to do things that other teenagers do, i.e. let her hormones run rampage in her relationship. But alas, Calla can’t have that. She has to be pure for everything ahead. Life gets even harder as she falls for someone that she is forbidden to be with.

I had so many favourite moments from this book, but I think it had to be the moment where everything clicked into place and Calla makes a decision for herself. I thought it was such a great scene. My least favourite parts of the books were the abusive masters and alphas that think they can do anything because they are the leaders. Such a shame on those that have to put up with it as they can’t do anything about it. They have to basically shut up and put up. I totally don’t think I could live the wolf life. I would end up dead for not being obedient enough.

Cremer covers quite a lot in Nightshade from the incorporation of religion to the supernatural creatures, e.g. succubi, incubi etc, it was great! I loved it when one of the character compares the wolf’s and Keeper’s history to religion. In a funny way it sort of makes sense but at the same time, the wolf is adamant that it’s nothing like religion. The amount of supernatural creatures involved are quite spectacular. You never knew what was going to come next which made the anticipation so much more exciting.

Overall, I absolutely and thoroughly enjoyed and book. One of my favourite books this year so far, I loved it that much. I would recommend it to any young adult and adults out there. It’s not too teenager’ish of a read and if your an adult you will still be able to relate to the characters.

1. What/who inspired you to become a writer?

I think reading inspired me the most. I would often day dream of stories I read as a child and think up things I would have done differently. My first attempts at writing were at the age of nine. I tried to write a mystery story that featured me and my cousin. I was a huge Nancy Drew fan at the time. Unbeknownst to me, my mom saved all those writings of mine. I found them in a box of hers when I was going through her things after she passed away. It brought tears to my eyes, and more than a little bit of laughter too when I read them. My mom always encouraged me in my writings, and was very influential in my love of reading.

2. Which of your books was the easiest to write/hardest to write and why?

Book two, The Demon Kiss, was definitely the easiest to write. I wrote it in seven days. I felt like someone was just feeding the material straight into my head and I could hardly type fast enough to keep up with it! I worked on it for probably 20 hours a day, stopping for a few hours to sleep when exhaustion hit. I would wake up out of a dead sleep with ideas and start writing again. I had to start keeping my computer by the bed so I didn’t have to keep running into the other room to type stuff!

Book four, The Dark Rising, was the most difficult. My first version of The Trouble with Spells came out right in the middle of writing it and kind of threw me off my groove. I stopped writing to do marketing stuff and when I tried to pick up again I felt like I had hit a brick wall. I was just stuck. My mother-in-law called me up one day and said she had a suggestion for the book that might help me out. I actually laughed out loud at her idea, it seemed so ludicrous. But it turned out to be the comment that got the imagination rolling again, and her tip ended up turning into a fabulous story line.

3. Any fan of yours who has read your blog or your book will know that Matt Lanter (Liam from 90210) was your model for character Vance. If you could pick your own dreamcast to play your characters in a movie or TV series, who would they be?

Ha! Yes, Matt has been such a sweetheart about all of this. He’s a great guy!

I actually put a lot of thought into this question after Matt’s manager asked for the books. As far as the cast in book one I would like Matt to be Vance, of course. I would absolute love Emma Roberts to be Portia. She’s just so cute. When I wrote the part of Shelly it was actually with the image of Taylor Swift in mind. I had seen her on an episode of CSI and loved her in it. I think Zach Roerig from Vampire Diaries would be the perfect Brad. He’s dreamy! I like Rob Estes for Portia’s dad Sean, Selma Hayek for Portia’s mom, and Diane Keaton for Portia’s grandma, Milly. I think Amy Brenneman would be the perfect choice for Vance’s mom, Krista, and I had the ever-so-deliciously-evil Sean Bean in mind when I wrote Vance’s dad, Damien Cummings.

4. How many more books do you have planned for the Witches & Warlocks series?

There will be five books total. The first three are released right now. Book four, The Dark Rising, is finished and awaiting its release which I believe is slated for June. I’m halfway through writing the final installment, tentatively called Possession of Souls, now. I’m on chapter sixteen I believe. I’ve had to stop writing on it to do the release for this book, so hopefully I will be able to pick it up easily again soon!

5. What is your favorite scene/chapter from all of your books and why?

I don’t think I could pick! I love all the romantic scenes between Vance and Portia, but I also loved getting into the heads of some of the evil characters through the story. If I were to try to narrow it down to something I would have to pick a scene that happens at the end of book three that was extremely difficult for me to write. I don’t want to say what it is for those who haven’t read it yet, but I got sick from crying over it so much that I ended up with pneumonia! I would say I was probably most emotionally invested into that scene, and I still can’t read it without crying.

6. What is your favorite book of all time and why?

I want every book I pick up to read to be my favorite book of all time! I have favorites in all types of genres I have read, but way too many to even consider picking just one. In fact, that would probably be the way people could best torture me, lock me in a room and make me choose one book to be my favorite! I would go crazy! I sweat over picking my top ten for my end of the year blog posts!!

I can give you my favorite book I read in the last year. That was Forbidden, by Tabitha Suzuma. That book has a very controversial subject matter, dealing with an incestuous relationship, but it was written extremely well and afforded the reader a glimpse into the world of someone who is traumatized by their feelings. I think I still have a knot in my throat from reading that book. It was gripping.

Review: Becoming Human, Episode 8

BBC Three aired the entire series of Becoming Human on Sunday night including the finale.

In the final episode we finally find out who Matt’s (the ghost) killer is. I honestly never saw it coming. I didn’t think it was the person it turned out to be. Christa knocks the killer out and Adam decides he wants to get revenge by drinking his blood. Matt and Christa manage to stop him.

Now that Matt has finally completed his unfinished business, his door appears. He doesn’t know whether to go or not. Christa and Adam are both hesitant about seeing their, now, friend leave them forever. During Matt’s internal dilemma, the murdered comes around and tries to attack the trio once more. But it doesn’t end too well for him.

Sorry this review is short, but I really don’t want to give away too much of the ending for those that haven’t seen it yet. But I can say it was well worth the wait and the killer is who you least suspect, and I mean the killer wouldn’t have been on your radar at all. Well maybe on yours, but he wasn’t on mine.

Poor Carly has had a tough upbringing, dealing with an abusive step father and caring for her younger brother, Mitchell. No wonder her anger gets the better of her. Eventually her rage takes over and transports her to this beautiful purple storm world. This is her only escape from reality.

In her storm world, Carly meets a boy, his name is Morgan. He is her guardian, sort of. He tries to explain to her the best he can what the storm world is and how it affects them. Carly is more concerned as to what is happening back in the real world to Mitchell when she is off gallivanting in her storm world. But she doesn’t know how escape from the storm world, this is where she needs to depend on Morgan.

Well I must say that this story was rather touching and moving. I felt so bad for Carly and Mitchell for having to put up with such an awful step father. Carly is burdened even more by trying to protect her Mitchell as best she can but she isn’t always successful. The history behind the tree in Carly’s storm world I thought was rather fascinating as well as the initials that are carved into it. Quite an inventive feature and central to Carly’s story.

What intrigued me the most was Morgan. I wanted to know so much more about him, just like Carly. I had an inkling as to who Morgan was as I read on, but wasn’t too sure so I was happy to find out that I was right in the end. Made the ending so much better for me but at the same time I wanted it to keep going. There is so much more of Carly’s story I want to know. This book is definitely worth the read and it won’t take you long.

It doesn’t help that three of those guys are making her life pretty complicated: Simon, the angelic apprentice who has heaven on his side; Beck, the tough trapper who thinks he’s God’s gift, and Ori, the strikingly sexy stranger who keeps turning up to save her life.

One thing’s for sure – if she doesn’t keep her wits about her there’ll be hell to pay...

Forsaken is the first book in The Demon Trappers series by Jana Oliver. This book had me laughing, nearly crying and shouting in my head all the way through. I was instantly hooked and could not put this book down.

Riley Blackthorne is an apprentice trapper to her dad, Paul, the most well known master trapper that there is in Atlanta. She strives to be the best she can be and sorely wants to be like her dad and just wants to make him proud.

Beck used to be Riley’s dad’s apprentice but has currently taken up the occupation of being the biggest thorn in her side. He gets on her every last nerve no matter what he does. There’s a few reasons why Riley detests Beck so much but I will leave that for you to find out by reading the book. The conflict between these two characters makes for an interesting read. I love their quick witted quips back and forth.

Simon is a fellow apprentice of Riley’s but he works for another master, Harper. He looks out for Riley and likes her. His support and friendship means a lot to Riley as she doesn’t have much friends.

I have so many favourite moments from this book and it was one of those books that I couldn’t put down. Some of my favourite moments are between Beck and Riley and Peter and Riley. These are the most funny interactions I have come across in a book in a while.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. It’s definitely a must read if you like dystopian type stories that are based around the supernatural. There are a few curse words so I would think this book would be best aimed towards teens and adults.

Portia Mullins is your typical teenage girl. She loves hanging out with her best friend Shelly and spending time with her family. But now that her sixteenth birthday approaches it means she can start dating and boy does she pick the good ones. Not only that but she uncovers that she is also a witch.

Vance Mangum is the local bad boy. He rides a motorcycle and is drop dead gorgeous and not only that but the boy is seriously gifted. I don’t mean he is an underachiever, I mean he has some seriously awesome talent because he is a…warlock. Vance is over excited that it’s Portia’s sixteenth birthday because it means he can finally get to know her instead of admiring her from a distance.

Well, what can I say? This is my second time reading this book and I still love it. All the added extra scenes was definitely worth the re-print. My favourite part of the book was the prologue, this is a new section that was added to the book. I loved it because it was all from Vance’s perspective which was awesome. I think the first time I read the book I didn’t fully comprehend Vance’s feelings from Portia but this opening chapter explains it all and it made me realize how much he had to go through staying away from her for all that time and then eventually being able to let out all that pent up love.

I don’t think there were any parts of the book that I disliked. There was one moment, but I wouldn’t say I disliked it. It’s essential to the book plot and set up for the next book but it doesn’t make it pleasant. Tugged at my heart strings it did. Lacey sure knows how to build up the drama. Although I was giggling at certain parts.
Overall, brilliant book and I would highly recommend to anyone that is interested in reading about witches.

Question: Do you read only one book at a time, or do you have several going at once?
Answer: I generally only have one book being read at any given time although I have sometimes in past read two at once.

I think if I try to read more than one book at once then things can get confusing, i.e. information from the two different stories overlap. I don't want my confusion to come across in a review, as that would look rather unprofessional and stupid of me.

Review: Becoming Human, Episode 7

This week webisode follows Christa acting as bloodhound to try and find Matt’s dead body. After speaking with George, Adam helps Christa set up an area where she will go to change. He does this with the trusty old chicken on a string. Gotta love the chicken on a string.

Christa uses her heightened sense of smell due to the full moon to try and find Matt’s body. Unfortunately for Adam and Matt they get stuck in the same room as her whilst she changes into a werewolf. This wouldn’t really do anything to Matt but it could mean Adam’s final death. The vampires quick thinking gets Christa into a cupboard away from him and this is where Christa remains for the duration of the night.

The morning after the full moon is when they discover Matt’s body after joking that Christa had probably eaten it when she was in wolf form as they eat anything. Good thing she never ate him, I don’t think she would be able to stop throwing up knowing she has ate the only evidence they had to proving Matt was murdered and that it still leaves Matt with unfinished business. Oh and the fact that she ate a human being. Would it be cannibalism if Christa ate Matt’s body whilst she is a werewolf? Hmm..may have to ponder that one.

My favourite part of the whole episode was watching Christa’s transformation. It was so different from George, Nina, McNair and Tom. I did feel really bad for her because she has to go through all this alone, she hasn’t had anyone to help her with the werewolf stuff. I think she should go meet George and Nina. Fingers crossed we have a merging of the series’ in the Becoming Human finale. I think meeting Nina and George would do Christa a lot of good. It may help her embrace the wolf as part of her or just not let it bother her the other twenty odd days of the month.

Review: Being Human UK, Series 3, Episode - The Wolf Shaped Bullet

Synopsis
Comedy-drama series about three twenty-something housemates trying to live normal lives, despite struggling with unusual afflictions – one is a werewolf, one is a vampire and the other is a ghost.

In the powerful climax to the series, Nina’s fate hangs in the balance, whilst Annie battles with Lia for her soul. Herrick pits George against Mitchell.

What I Thought

SPOILER ALERT
Well after that episode I just wanted to have a good old cry. It was absolutely amazing and absolutely heart wrenching at the same time. I can’t even review this episode without giving spoilers away, well I could, but I don’t want to. I want to tell you what happened. So here goes...

George tries to get into the police station to see Mitchell and get him out of there but with no luck he is turned around by the policemen and has to find another way in. At this point Herrick is sitting outside the police station is his stolen uniform biding his time to break Mitchell out. Annie on the other hand is all for making Mitchell stay locked up, no matter the repercussions.

Tom makes his way back to Honolulu Heights after his night in the woods to find McNair dead along with about a half dozen police officers and a dying Nina at the bottom of the stairs after her attempt to get to a phone to call for an ambulance. Tom must have called the ambulance because next thing we know, Nina is in the hospital fighting for her life. After Annie finds out what Herrick has done, she rushes to Nina’s side, only to be coerced by a rhyme, into returning to purgatory by Lia, which is funnily being spouted out the mouth of a dead policeman.

Lia waits for Annie and basically reveals her plan. There was no prophecy, she was just wanted revenge on Mitchell for her death and the hurt it has caused her family. Lia isn’t fully aware of the collateral damage her revenge campaign has caused, but Annie is quick to let her know. Mitchell has made Lia’s prophecy into a self-fulfilling one.

Meanwhile, Herrick has done a mighty fine job of pitting George against Mitchell. As the two friends fight, Tom enters wanting to pay back from Herrick for his fathers death. In the end Herrick meets his final death once more, but not at Tom’s hand. Mitchell realises that the only way he can stop hurting the people he loves and others is for him to meet his true death. But who does he pick to carry out the horrible, horrible deed? Poor old, kind, gentle George. Of all the people he want to do it, it has to be George.

Well..the last scene of this episode was literally the most saddest thing I have ever watched. I didn’t think George could do it – but he did. And now Mitchell is no more. But George and the gang have another enemy on their hands, the ‘Old Ones’. The also discover that George and Nina’s pregnancy is a one of a kind, it has never happened before and the ‘Old Ones’ reckon Annie is stronger than they all know. I wonder how this will all pan out now that Mitchell isn’t there to keep them updated on the weird and wonderful world of vampires.

I am happy to report that Being Human has been commissioned for a fourth season which I am sure will detail the gang’s journey and their fight against the ‘Old Ones’ but I think it may be lacking what with Mitchell out of the picture. Hopefully his departing doesn’t affect the Being Human fan base as it could have a detrimental effect on the series and it’s airing future. I personally will continue to watch the show - hoping against hope that Mitchell returns in one form or another. I have a great idea on how to resurrect Mitchell but not in the creepy way that Herrick did it. It would be better if they brought Mitchell as a ghost. I think my idea would be great (not being biased at all LOL) and it would mean Mitchell could be with Annie. Being Human hasn’t really gone into whether vampires can become ghosts or not (if they have, someone please tell me because I have obviously missed it). What do you guys think is in store for season four?

Interview & Giveaway with... Hal Goodman

Today I have Hal Goodman, author of Logic of Demons, on the blog with a mini-interview and giveaway with not just one, but two books to give away.

Whas was the inspiration behind your book?

I realized last year that my imagination was slowly dying. The times I used to spend as a kid reading comic books and drawing seemed light years away and I wanted to relive a very important part of my childhood. I also happened to be betrayed by some close friends. This betrayal (along with some other issues) caused me to enter into a deep depression for several months. Writing Logic of Demons was a catharsis because it helped me vent a number of painful emotions into the characters and story. However, the novel doesn’t only consist of negative feelings. A great deal of my cherished interests, from fantasy and science fiction to international relations and politics are represented in the novel as well.

In addition, my experience as a high school history teacher at Hamilton High in Los Angeles inspired a great portion of the book. I had the privilege of teaching extremely talented and creative young people. To give you an example of the type of students I had, it wasn’t out of the ordinary to see these teenagers draw amazing anime stories or a picture of Spiderman flying through the sky. And it was easy for them, whereas it would take me a year to draw the same picture. These students reminded me what it was like to be young and some of them showed tremendous courage overcoming adversity (a lot more strength and courage than I ever had at that age). My teaching experience definitely served to open up my imagination a great deal and helped me with the novel.

As for the other aspect of my inspiration, one of the close friends who hurt me had recently turned into a deeply “religious” individual. I remember one evening he explained to me and my girlfriend that angels and demons flew around human beings, luring them into different moral directions like an ethereal compass. I even remember that in the last conversation we ever had over the phone, he quoted a bible verse in an attempt at giving me advice. I realized soon after that it was his actions, my actions, and a person’s behavior that influences the moral outcome of events, not the external embodiments or personifications of good or evil. Logic of Demons is a way for people to see a certain view of morality, which is essentially based on the choices we make that affect others, not the beliefs we have in our mind. This philosophy and my teaching experience, as well as my desire to create something, inspired me to write the novel.

How did you came to write about the supernatural genre?

Fantasy, science fiction, and the supernatural genre share one thing in common. There are really no limitations in terms of what one can create or write about. Often times in a person’s life, waking up and doing the same thing over and over again can seem mundane and even, in some cases, sap the wonder and joy out of life. But with the supernatural genre, suddenly human beings are interacting with ghosts, demons, vampires, and other creatures. Life becomes a lot more interesting when having a conversation with a zombie (or a unicorn). In addition, this type of genre gives a writer the ability to invoke a moral or even a political statement. You can comment about life through this type of genre in a way that a person standing on a podium speaking to thousands can’t.

What was your experience like with self-publishing and can you give any advice to other budding authors out there?

Well, I self published my novel because I didn’t want to wait a million years for an agent or someone to deem my work worthy of publishing. I am very pleased that the feedback from reviewers thus far (and readers) has been positive, but I wrote this novel primarily for myself. Of course, I want to have some type of success with Logic of Demons and eventually write more novels, but this endeavor was cathartic and healing experience.

As for self publishing, I would say make sure that you edit your novel appropriately since the self publisher will print anything (or almost anything) you give them. This perhaps is some of the reason that certain people state they don’t read self published novels, although I’ve been fortunate to have a great number of reviewers currently reading Logic of Demons.

Are any of your characters or their traits based on people you know?

Absolutely. One of the best things about writing a novel is that you can create characters based on people you know. This can be a tremendously healing experience, especially if there are people in your life (who you care about) who have hurt you in some way. Or, it can be a tribute to people who have helped you. Both kinds of individuals are represented in Logic of Demons. Even loved ones are sprinkled in the story and within various characters at once. I can say one thing; I would never have been able to write this novel without the support of my family. Also, I could never have thought of the plot without having been hurt by some friends.

Have you always wanted to write or did you have other aspirations growing up?

I never thought I would write a novel. I’m glad I did because now my imagination has very few limitations. Whereas before I thought that a cherished potion of my childhood was lost forever, I can now create entire worlds in my mind. One of the perks of writing a novel, in a way, is that you never truly have to “grow up” and you can still be as free and imaginative as a young person. That’s what I like most about writing.

Review: Becoming Human, Episode 6

This weeks’ webisode is slowly bringing us full circle in the ‘who killed Matt’ mystery. This week the gang have been investigating the possible escape route of Matt’s killer as they follow the map that marks all the CCTV cameras in the school.

They find themselves in the gym and having to hide from Mr Roe, the P.E. teacher, inside the gym equipment. Mr Roe finds them hiding out but is none the wiser as they are too engrossed in one another for Roe to think they were spying on him.

Christa finally admits that there is something supernatural about her. Her nose has been picking up scents that neither Adam or Matt can pick up. Matt not picking them up the scent is obvious as he is a ghost but I would have thought Adam would have smelt something seeing as he is a vampire and would have a keen sense of smell. Then again Mitchell doesn’t seem to have as such a good nose as George does in Being Human. Christa is still in denial at being a werewolf and she isn’t ready to admit it to anyone out loud. She will admit there is something weird about her and it has to do with the full moon, but nothing more. Poor Christa, I feel sorry for her. Having to go through all this without anyone else. Reminds me of George before he had Nina in Being Human.

Overall an insightful episode. We find a possible location for Matt’s body and this would indicate that the gang are onto the killer. Next week’s episode looks promising with a full moon on the way.

Review: Being Human UK, Series 3, Episode 7 - Though The Heavens Fall

Synopsis

With the full moon looming and a house full of werewolves, pressure mounts on Mitchell.

What I Thought

Well what an episode! So much happened and it was just shock after shock after shock (you get the picture). Just when you think it can’t get any worse, it does. It had me sitting on the edge of my seat all the way through and I was tempted to shout at the television a few times, but I don’t think the neighbours would appreciate it.

Annie is still on her crusade to bring the Box Tunnel murderer to justice but boy, does she get a shock when she finds out the truth. Is this the end for her and Mitchell? All I will say is that it doesn’t end so well for Mitchell and basically the supernatural world is on the verge of being discovered.

McNair and Tom make a reappearance in this episode which means there’s more of a chance that Mitchell will meet his grisly end by werewolf as the full moon approaches. However, McNair has someone else in his line of fire first before he even considers exacting his revenge on Mitchell.

Nina and George have a bit of a bonding experience with Tom as they get ready for their night in the woods. George tries to convince Tom into leaving McNair and have him live with them in a more family kind of unit. On their return from their monthly trip, they go for a quick check to make sure the baby is alright and make a startling discovery but nothing quite as shocking as when George finds out about Mitchell’s situation on their return to Honolulu Heights.

Herrick..now where do I start with him? This is a pivotal episode for Herrick as this is where we see him discover his old self and all the memories that go with it. This time round though Herrick seems to have a bit of a moral dilemma on his hands when it comes to how to deal with the housemates.

I really don’t want to give away too much and to be truthfully honest I am still digesting it all and getting over the shock. But if I had to pick one moment that was my absolute favourite, I think it would have to be Annie trying to rationalise the whole Box Tunnel and Mitchell situation. Absolutely hilarious! I’m not sure if I will be able to handle the finale if it’s anything like this episode but I this has definitely been the most dramatic episode in the series so far.
